What is the Process of the Motability Scheme?

Any individual who is in receipt of a higher rate mobility allowance is able to use their allowance to lease a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair or a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle or suitable car. The scheme is designed to offer a smooth process to allow you to have the freedom of choice to get around and choose the perfect powered wheelchair or mobility scooter. The payments made for your lease are deducted from your higher monthly rate mobility allowance every 4 weeks which is paid directly by the Department of Work & Pensions (DWP)

Which Allowances Can Be Used for the Motability Scheme?

The following allowances can be used for the Motability Scheme to allow you to lease a new powered wheelchair or new scooter every 3 years. 

 

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance 
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

 

Please note – Attendance Allowance cannot be used for the Motability Scheme.
